1. Grammar: Present Perfect vs Past Simple

Present Perfect

Past experiences that can be repeated (number of occurences)
Experiencias en el pasado que se pueden repetir.

  • Have you ever been to Rome? ¿Alguna vez has estado en Roma?
  • I've been to Rome 5 times. He estado en Roma 5 veces.
Compare to experiences that can't be repeated:

1. Pronunciation

Let's go to page 17. Look at the information in exercise 2. Most two syllable words in English have the stress on the first syllable. Remember that syllables with the "schwa" symbol (la "e" dada la vuelta) never carry the stress.

Now underline the stressed syllables in exercise 2a. Listen to track 1.49 to check your answers.

5. Grammar: Present Perfect

The structure of the present perfect is similar to haber + participio pasado.

Subject + have/has + past participle + object
      I               have              seen              that film.

We use  the present perfect to talk about experiences using ever/never.

Have you ever been to China? I have never been to China.
¿Alguna vez has estado en China? Nunca he estado en China.

We use the present perfect to talk about recent past actions. We can use "just" to express the same idea as acabar de hacer algo / venir de hacer algo

I have just arrived. Acabo de llegar.

We did a worksheet (from the Básico 1 book) on present perfect. We also looked at irregular past participles.

*Remember: We use the past continuous for long past actions. Its equivalent in Spanish is the pretérito imperfecto or a perífrasis verbal:

Estaba lloviendo cuando salí de trabajar. (perífrasis verbal)

*Remember: We often use the past continuous to desribe a past situation, especially at the beginning of a story.
